If someone is going to stand out in a world dominated by Batman, they had better have an amazing back-story to bring them to life. The character of Batgirl has been filled by various characters throughout the years, but which claims the best back-story for the heroine?
When she was first created, Batgirl was the niece of Batwoman. She was meant as a counter-part to Robin and maybe even a love interest for him. However, she was dropped early on.Didn-t catch that? This explains it.
The Batgirl that most people are familiar with is Barbara Gordon. As the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, she is a natural ally for Batman. She is portrayed as an intelligent woman, as well as a crime fighting champion.
A later version of Batgirl is also known as the Huntress, or Helena Bertinelli. This Batgirl does not last long, as Batman does not approve and requires her to abandon the role.
As Cassandra Cain, she has a very interesting background. Raised by her assassin father for the sole purpose of becoming a perfect weapon, she is unable to speak. Instead, she reads body language. She turns from her father, and tries to redeem herself by teaming up with Batman.
Looking at the various batgirls and their wide range of histories, two seem to stand out above the rest. Cassandra Cain has the most interesting story, a story worthy of the comics. However, Barbara Gordon fits the world of Batman. Her background and character are the right one for Batgirl.
